Summer School
We offer a six-week nationwide summer school programme during which approximately 70 Optometry students in their penultimate year of study have the opportunity to work and train in one of our branches. In November and December of each year we visit each of the UK Optometry Departments to inform students of the D&A Summer School. This gives the students ample opportunity to ask questions of current D&A graduate optometrists, students who have attended the previous Summer School, recently qualified optometrists, graduate optometrists' supervisors and some Support Centre Staff. Although it is not essential to attend these informal evening sessions they provide a good opportunity for students to learn about the D&A recruitment process and the optometric career pathway at D&A. Application to the D&A Summer School is via an application form that is distributed at the evening presentations.
After the six-week placement we offer over half of the Summer School students the opportunity to gain entry into the D&A Graduate Optometrist (Pre-registration Optometrist) programme. Graduate Optometrist
The Pre-registration Period at D&A is highly sought after and offers a structured programme to build on the academic and clinical knowledge gained during your university training. D&A uses an innovative mix of continuous coursework, cluster group meetings, mock quarterly assessments and a total of 14 days of residential courses held at Aston University's Vision Sciences Department. In addition to helping with clinical and academic aspects we also help to ensure that you have ample support from practice and regional colleagues.
Although the majority of our Graduate Optometrist Placements are given to Summer School students, some places are available outside this scheme. These Direct Entry places become available between December and February of each cycle.
